RAIN storms neurocomputing
Brussels 04-04-1997 RAIN: Redundant Array of Inexpensive workstations for Neurocomputing, is a new initative of the European Commission. RAIN is the development of two technology demonstrators in the field of neurocomputing on a cluster of workstations. The applications will be selected from the most representative in the industrial and medical field. RAIN is developed by the University of Genova, Italy.
The RAIN system will demonstrate the industrial and medical applications using a cluster of heterogeneous workstations ranging from Pentium PCs to Unix workstations. The system will demonstrate the influence of different LAN solutions on the performance of a workstation cluster, by using Ethernet (10Mbps), 100VG AnyLAN (100 Mbps) and ATM (up to 600 Mbps) LANs and provide a forecast the computational power needed for the particular problem;
Another goal of RAIN is to issue a best practice recommendation for the use of workstation clusters in HPCN industrial and medical applications.
The choice of a workstation clusters as a high performance computer will allow the display of demonstrators in real-time. RAIN will be based on public domain development software.
