Unisource launches first pan-European Internet service

Hoofddorp, 20-05-1997 After a successful testing phase Unisource officially launched its pan-European Internet backbone network (on which we reported in our February issue), which, as a services platform, forms an important part of the European Commission funded TEN-34 network.

TEN-34 is a project supported by the European Commission, which interconnects already existing national research networks and provides multimedia and real-time applications to leading European research institutes and universities. The high-speed and high capacity Internet backbone which directly connects Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK is maintained and centrally managed by Unisource Carrier Services, a 100% owned subsidiary of Unisource NV.

The Unisource Internet backbone with its capacity of at least 34 Mbit/s allows the use of high-bandwidth advanced applications like borderless tele-working, tele-engineering, tele-medicine, video-conferencing etc.

As a first pan-European solution in this future-oriented area of modern telecommunications technology the Unisource Internet backbone network, as a services platform, also provides access to global Internet.
