European TTN projects improve industrial competitiveness
Brussels
, 02 August 1997
The TTN initative of the European Commission is taken shape. The twenty Technology Transfer Nodes (TTN's) spread al over Europe are installed and work with industry in some 80 projects to bring HPCN technology to smalle and medium sized companies. Their newly opened web site gives an overview of this major initatieve.
The TTN iniativeshould improve industrial competitiveness through the promotion of High Performance Computing and Networking (HPCN) across a wide range of industries. This initiative specifically targets smaller organisations which can now afford low-cost powerful systems made out of commodity components.
The more widespread adoption of HPCN technology across industry at large is expected to boost competitiveness with resultant economic benefits for Europe.
HPCN is an enabling technology which can be applied in many diverse areas such as: advanced engineering design; optimisation and scheduling; product inspection and quality control; and data mining. The TTN's have started together 80 projects in these fields with a strong involvment of industry.
In all of these areas, advanced networking services have become an integral part of HPCN systems and infrastructures. High speed networking enables applications which allow sharing and provide interactive use of remote resources, and it supports interaction between concurrent activities in geographically dispersed locations.
The TTN's are funded through the Esprit programme of the European Commission . It is a network of centres across Europe. The activities the Technology Transfer Nodes include coordinating groups of projects which tackle important industrial applications, demonstrations at industrial conferences, dissemination of publicity material, organisation of seminars and workshops, and publication of magazine and journal articles.
The focus of the TTN activities is on satisfying business requirements, not on promoting technology.
