17-02-9 Esprit 1997: first call March 15
First call for the new Esprit 1997 work programme, will be on March 15. Next calls are planned for June 15 and September 16. The work programme supersedes the 1996 one. New tasks called for are on Large Scale Collaboration Test Beds. The 1997 work programme introduces four themes: IT for Mobility; Electronic Commerce; Information Access and Interfaces; Learning and Training in Industry

17-02-97EU-China HPCN industrial initative

An EU-China HPCN industrial initiative has been set up to raise awareness of the European technology and expertise in China inform the European business community about market opportunities and offer a business forum to establish direct contacts between European and Chinese partners. During 1997 several activities in China and Europe will be organised.

12-02-97 Unisource builds part of TEN-34 pan-European network

AT&T-Unisource Communications Services has been awarded a contract to build a part of the European high-speed network supported by the European Commission in the TEN-34 project. The trans-European network will be based on ATM technology, with at least 34 Mbit/s. This AT&T-Unisource part of the network will initially connect Spain, Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, The United Kingdom, and the Nordic countries.

10-02-97Windows based parallel computing
The European Commission has launched a new 2 Mecu project under the Esprit4 Framework for HPCN, called WINPAR. Within WINPAR, an integrated parallelsoftware development environment will be developed for networked personal computers running Windows NT . On top of PVM andMPI, existing tools like AUGUR, MODARCH, ParadiseC++, and TRAPPER will be enhanced and integrated. The 2 year project is coordinated by Genias Software. Other partners are Dash Associates, GMD, SIMULOG, Transvalor, and the Universities of Coimbra and Vienna.
