27-5-97 EU-China initative organizes workshops in Pisa and London
The EU-China HPCN initative organizes two workshops in Pisa (June 16) and London/ Abingdon (June 18) to bring together Chinese companies that are interested in possible cooperation, and their European counterparts. Experts from China and experts in trading and setting up joint-ventures with China will also be present.

After a successful testing phase Unisource officially launched its pan-European Internet backbone network (on which we reported in our February issue), which, as a services platform, forms an important part of the European Commission funded TEN-34 network.

In this second part of a news feature (first appeared in our March issue), Thierry Van der Pyl, chief of High Performance Computing R&D in the European Commission warns of the damage high telecoms charges are doing to EU efforts to boost networking. He talks further about HPCN's role in the next EU R&D programme which will merge the current Telematics, ACTS telecoms and Esprit R&D programmes into one "user friendly information society" programme. And Van der Pyl also describes how the commission is linking up with HPCN experts in the Far-East.
