- 28-11-96 Wide-area high-performance networking crossing borders

Wide area high-performance networking is becoming an important integrated part of HPCN. ISDN and ATM are used, or will be used in many ground Esprit funded projects. This was shown at the workshop "Promoting Networking Best Practice in Industry EITC'96" held on November 28 in Brussels. Several European projects have finished that employ cross-border High Performance networking, many new ones are started.

More than threehundred European researchers have benefited from High Performance Computing (HPC) within the EC Fourth Framework Programme (1994-1998) thanks to the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR). This programme is a successor to the Human Capital and Mobility EC programme which ended in 1987 and was a pilot-scheme of the Second Framework Programme to make ease access of the researchers to Europe's large-scale research facilities.

On November 5, at the European Patent Office, several speakers from research, academia and industry presented the benefits of HPCN for SMEs. A combined effort the European Commission in Munich, the European Patent Office, Bavaria Innovativ GmbH, University of the Bundeswehr, TU Munich and University Erlangen organised the seminar. Surprisingly for the organisers, about 250 participants registered; from academia, research, government, major and small and medium enterprises. The program covered a broad spectrum, from the road into the information society, HPCN - an EU perspective to applications in industry and embedded systems. In the afternoon in two workshops two different aspects were discussed, parallel processing, neural nets, pattern recognition, virtual reality and medical applications and HPCN, real applications in CFD, automotive and FEM.
- 13-11-96 HPCN at the EITC '96
- The
European IT Conference & Exhibition (EITC '96) is taking place
in Brussels at the end of the month, 25 - 27 November. It will include
a number of workshops and demonstrations that are of interest for the HPCN
community. EITC '96 is closing on the 28th, with a "free entrance"
Post-Conference Workshop and Exhibition Session, where various HPCN issues
will also be addressed
