- 12-12-96 HPCN Technology Transfer Nodes unveiled at European EIT conference

At the HPCN workshop in Brussels, 28th November, Max Lemke under the watchful eye of Thiery Van der Pyl, head of the CEC HPCN unit, chaired thirty presentations - six minutes each - on the planned Technology Transfer Nodes. Sliding from Helsinki to Athens, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Bologna, Amsterdam, Vienna, Toulouse, Stuttgart, Southampton and taking breakfast with rashers of tasty Danish bacon developed by solving a system of 10 million equations using a high performance computer. The Take-up and Transfer Nodes are designed to provide regional HPCN facilities which can be used to demonstrate benefits to industry and especially SMEs.

The European Centre for parallelism of Barcelona (CEPBA) is among the 20 European Technology Transfer Nodes (TTNs), which aim at promoting the use of parallelism in SMEs carrying out Preparatory, Support and Transfer Activities (PST) under the EC Specific Programme for Research and Technological Development (RTD) to increase the competitiveness of industry in Europe. This was revealed at the Post EIT Conference workshop in Brussels last month. The centre director, Jesús Labarta, has underlined that CEPBA "is proud of having been chosen to take part in the TTNs programme because it is a recognition of the work it has done with the PCI-PACOS and the PCI-II projects and because that means it is trustworthy enough to keep on working in the same direction"

In the article "European Commission support for Eastern and Central European countries" published in Primeur Monthly, November 1996, several errors did creep in. Most notably, financial figures mentioned for the Vth framework programme were incorrect. (They were IVth framework figures.) Here we publish a corrected version of the article.

- 1-12-96 Euromed couples HPCN and 3-D
visualisation for telemedical diagnosis

Euromed is a European Commission funded three year
project. Euromed will collaboratively exploit, combine and support HPCN activities to enhance and standard ise visualisation techniques to be used in telemedicine applications throughout Europe. First, Euromed will create a hierarchical telemedicine network throughout Europe and Ex-Soviet Union countries linking isolated medical sites
with specialised clinics and HPCN centres. Second, Euromed will develop a hierarchical telemedical visualisation suite of packages incorporating,superimposing and enhancing presently used image modalities such as CT, MRI, Angiography, PET and SPECT and newer techniques such as Ultrasound diffraction tomography.
Third, Euromed will use WWW and its tools to combine the telemedicine network. Phase one strated in January 1996.
