MIPS group expects to ship 70 millionth RISC processor next month

Mountain View, 18 November 97 The MIPS Group of Silicon Graphics expects the MIPS174 architecture is continuing its high growth rate and expects to see the 70 millionth MIPS RISC processor ship sometime next month. MIPS processors are manufactured by semiconductor partners for a wide variety of markets and applications.

Over the last two years, the MIPS microprocessor architecture has grown by a factor of more than ten. In 1996, more than 19.2 million MIPS processors shipped from all MIPS semiconductor licensees, making it the largest RISC architecture, and representing an increase of nearly 300 percent over 1995. This year, MIPS partners expect to ship more than 35 million processors.

According to the MIPS group the reality of MIPS' volume shipment numbers speaks louder than marketing slogans or proclamations about the future. MIPS microprocessors are manufactured and sold by Integrated Device Technology, LSI Logic, NEC, NKK, Corporation, Philips Semiconductors, Quantum Effect Design and Toshiba.
