Sun signs OEM deal with Softway to sell Sharell software

Palo Alto, 17 November 97 Sun Microsystems and Softway, an Australian software company, have signed an OEM agreement for Sun to offer ShareII software with its Sun Enterprise server product line. Developed by Softway, ShareII is a resource management tool.

ShareII software offers resource management capabilities, augmenting what is offered with the Solaris operating environment. With ShareII CPUs, memory, disk space and UNIX¬ processes get shared fairly among all users and applications, an important task when multiple applications reside on a single server. When ShareII software is run, system administrators can allocate, control and manage these various system resources.

By writing a one-time `set and forget' allocation policy, system administrators can designate a proportion of system resources that can be used for each application or user. These resources can be allocated to accommodate an increasing or decreasing work load. The technology offers automatic resource allocation and an account of the actual usage of individuals and groups to facilitate future budgeting and resource planning. Internet Service Providers utilizing ShareII technology with their Enterprise servers can allocate specific amounts of resources for their subscribers. This will ensure that no one subscriber can monopolize all of the resources on the host system.

Organizations in a time-share environment, running a single application with many users, can also benefit use ShareII's resource management applications. During the end of a fiscal year, an IS manager can reallocate a larger portion of a system's resources to the finance department to provide a sufficient amount of CPU cycles to perform the functions needed to close year-end reports.

ShareII can also be applied to batch processing on Sun servers, where a system administrator can allocate more resources to the typical back-end activities such as report generation and back-up during off-peak hours. During peak hours, system resources can be dedicated to normal activities to maintain business operations.

ShareII technology will be available for use on Sun servers during the first half of 1998 and will be offered directly through Sun, as well as through the company's network of resellers and systems integrators. Softway is a UNIX and Open Systems software development company based in Sydney, Australia.
