Sun launches data centre server consolidation programme

Palo Alto, 17 November 97 Sun Microsystems has launched a data centre server consolidation programme designed to help customers reduce the complexity and cost of their information technology infrastructure by physically consolidating their servers and logically consolidating applications. The new programme helps Sun customers to evaluate their IT environment and identify areas where major benefits can be realized, and provides professional installation and system migration services.

The Enterprise 6000 and Enterprise 10000 servers scale up to 30 and 64 processors respectively, making it possible for one or two Enterprise 6000 or Starfire servers to be used in environments that otherwise would require multiple systems. Sun's mainframe-class Dynamic System Domain capability, currently available with the 64-CPU Starfire, allows system resources to be partitioned into domains and reconfigured without disrupting the production environment.

With this technology islolation of multiple applications on the same server and reconfiguration of resources is possible while maintaining system availability. Beginning in December 1997, Sun will expand the number of supported Dynamic System Domains from five to eight per Starfire system.
