 SuSE Announces Availability of Version 7.0
SuSE Linux AG, the international technology leader and solution provider in open source operating system (OS) software, offers their new release, SuSE Linux 7.0, in two targeted versions. SuSE Linux 7.0 Personal is tailored to the requirements of Linux newcomers and desktop users. SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional is appropriate for use as a server operating system. Both versions will be available at the end of August.

 European Commission funds GEANT 2.5 Gbit/s network with 80 million euro
The European Commission has decide to fund the GEANT network proposed by DANTE and the 25 national and regional European research and education networks (NRENs). It is now in the final stages of contract negotiation with the European Commission, which should lead to a financial contribution to the project of 80 million euro over four years by the EC.

  Largest Private Tunisian bank selects PeerLogic and Sun Starfire
PeerLogic's LiveContent TRANS has been selected by Banque Internationale Arabe de Tunisie (BIAT), the largest private Tunisian bank, to move its legacy banking applications to a Sun Enterprise 10000 Starfire server.

 Genroco takes 800 Mbyte/s technology to Europe and Japan
GENROCO demonstrated its new 800 megabyte per second Gigabyte System Network (GSN) interface card at a supercomputer industry gathering held in Japan last week. Representatives from Fujitsu, NEC, Hitachi, Compaq, SGI, and other platform vendors attended the seminar, which was hosted by Tokyo Electron LTD (TEL) and held at TEL's headquarters. On September 15, a workshop will be held at CERN in Geneva.

"Building Linux Clusters" is a new book by David HM Spector introducing Beowulf clusters. The list of the world's most powerful supercomputers now includes Beowulf machines: PCs running Linux, clustered together into a single machine. "From scientific applications to transaction processing, clustering technology provides an affordable, scalable computing solution. One of the hottest topics in Linux today is the ability to cluster Linux machines to mimic the performance of supercomputers (costing hundreds of thousands of dollars) for a fraction of the cost.", the author claims.

 Enhancements for Linux on S/390 servers
IBM unveiled hardware and software enhancements for Linux running on S/390 enterprise servers as well as new introductory pricing. The IBM S/390 Integrated Facility for Linux, a new hardware feature available for S/390 G5 and G6 servers, allows users to add processor capacity exclusively for Linux use.

 Visual serving initiative
SGI and over 15 leading representatives from education, government research and industry today announced the formation of the Visual Serving Initiative program. The Visual Serving Initiative program is a collaborative effort between SGI and industry leaders to accelerate the deployment of end-to-end solutions using the SGI OpenGL Vizserver technology. It is composed of an advisory board, software testing program, advanced development projects and a technical liaison. Among the members are Manchester University and the Swedisch National Supercomputing Centre.

 NSF Awards $45 Million to Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center for 6 Tflop/s supercomputer next year
The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) has been awarded $45 million from the National Science Foundation to provide "terascale" computing capability for U.S. researchers in all science and engineering disciplines. Through this award, PSC will collaborate with Compaq Computer Corporation to create a new, extremely powerful system for the use of scientists and engineers USA-wide.

GX Technology Corporation (GXT) announced today the introduction of BLink E-Service, the oil industry's first online, Web-based service for advanced seismic imaging. This new technology-to-business e-commerce solution provides worldwide, desktop collaboration and control throughout the course of imaging projects conducted with GXT.

 US airforce uses 128-processor Origin 2000 to run large rotocraft stealth calculations
Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation is to develop the U.S. Army's new RAH-66 Comanche armed reconnaissance helicopter on an SGI Origion 2000. Sikorsky's Origin 2000 server-based solution makes it possible for Sikorsky to run larger stealth aircraft design calculations than ever before. The 128-processor Origin 2000 server, which includes 32GB of memory and 2TB of disk storage, was installed in February 2000.
