 Russian Academy of Science buys Indian Param supercomputer
The Indian Center for Development of Advanced Computing has sold its third Param 110 Gflop/s supercomputer to the Russian Academy of Science's Institute for Computer Aided Design supporting scientific applications such as fluid dynamics, image processing and climate modelling.

 Java 2 on SuSE and TurboLinux
Sun announced expanded distribution for the Java 2 platform on the Linux operating system through agreements with SuSE and TurboLinux. Linux is one of numerous operating systems that support the Java 2 platform, including those from Sun, IBM, Compaq, HP, Microsoft, Apple, Novell, SGI, SCO, BSDi and BE.

SGI and SuSE Linux announced the delivery of Linux FailSafe. Linux FailSafe is a scalable and modular high-availability solution based on IRIS FailSafe clustering software from SGI. Linux FailSafe brings this advanced clustering capabilities to Linux.

WMPI, an implementation of MPI for NT iis now available as a commercial implementation from Portugal based Critical Software. WMPI implements release MPI-1 of the Message Passing Interface standard.

 High Performance networking Forum at CERN
Again this year HNF-Europe and CERN organise a High Performance Networking Workshop at CERN in Geneva, on Friday September 15. The subjects for the seminar part this year are: Progress in GSN technology including the ST protocol and SCSI over ST; SAN's on High Performance Networks and Cluster File Systems; and New High Performance Network Technologies.

A working quantum computer has been developed at IBM's Almaden Research Center. Scientists used it to show that such devices can solve problems that are hard to solve on conventional computers.

 Star Bridge delivers first supercomputer to CeriStar
Star Bridge delivered two HAL-15GrW1 Hypercomputers to CeriStar, a Salt Lake City telecommunications company. Each HAL-15GrW1 is a desktop machine with processing power equal to 10,000 750 MHz Pentium III processors. Star Bridge will receive License and Lease fees of $685,000 for each system under a $20 million license that calls for delivery of a total of 32 machines to CeriStar over the next eleven months. This is the first delivery ever of Star Bridge Systems.

 Open Inventor source code for Linux released
SGI has released the source code for its Open Inventor 3D graphics toolkit to the open source community. Open Inventor is the de facto standard for rapid development of graphics applications and is used in almost every industry, including CAD, geosciences, medicine, academia, chemistry and movie production.

 TurboLinux and SGI sign compiler technology agreement
TurboLinux, and SGI inked an agreement to incorporate SGI's SGI Pro64 compiler technology into TurboLinux's forthcoming release of TurboLinux for IA-64, for substantially increased IA-64 performance on Linux.

 Boston University installs 96 Gflop/s IBM SP system
Boston University will install a 96 Gflop/s RS/6000 SP that will double the institution's supercomputing capacity and will help researchers on a variety of projects in fields such as quantum physics, genome research as well as investigations into a cure for Alzheimer's.

 Yukawa Institute buys 40 Gflop/s NEC SX-5
The Yukawa Institute of Theoretical Physics of Kyoto University placed an order for a four processor SX-5/4C parallel vector supercomputer. The system is from the newly enhanced SX-5 Series and provides 40 Gflop/s peak performance.
