 EPFL inaugurated Swiss-T1 supercomputer
The Federal Polytechnical Institute of Lausanne (EPFL) has awarded itself with a new parallel supercomputer. Inaugurated on Wednesday 23rd August, the Swiss-T1 presents the particularity to use standard components. The machine was developed by EPFL, in collaboration with the Compaq and Supercomputing Systems (SCS) companies.

 EPCC installs small Beowulf cluster
The Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC) installed a small 16-Athlon processor Beowulf cluster called Bobcat, running RedHat Linux. EPCC also installed a Sun HPC 6500 18-processor Sun HPC 6500 UltraSPARC II based system for production runs of large and medium size parallel jobs.

  SCore Users Group Meeting
The First SCore Users Group Meeting will be held at Oxford University on October 3rd. It is supported by Oxford University and the Japanese Real World Computing Partnership. SCore is a cluster system software package to support cluster system users.

 SGI to sponsor RoboCup
SGI has entered a worldwide sponsorship agreement with the RoboCup Federation, a non profit organization based in Bern, Switzerland that promotes state-of-the-art robotics and artificial intelligence research. SGI will provide the RoboCup Federation with computer equipment and technical support, primarily on the Linux platform, for three years beginning with RoboCup 2000, the fourth world robot soccer championship in Melbourne, Australia that started on August 28, 2000.

 Joint Strike Fighter developed with SGI visual supercomputers
SGI announced that its visual computing systems are being used by the two contractors competing to build about 3,000 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps and the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. Other European countries could also opt for the JSF or for the competing Eurofighter.

 Cobion's ImageCenter uses supercomputer power to detect Internet brand infringements
Cobion GmbH inaugurated operations of its Global ImageCenter, the largest indexed database of online images in the world. The ImageCenter, powered by a 500 CPU parallel processing supercomputer, is the engine behind Cobion's unique image-based brand protection services. It is supported by an integrated array of high speed databases which index 30 to 50 million images from the Web each day.

 VN's IMSL on Redhat's Linux
Visual Numerics has ported its IMSL Fortran 90 Library to the Red Hat Linux operating system. This port was accomplished using the Fortran 90 compiler from The Portland Group.

 Sun leads TPC-C benchmark
The Sun Enterprise 10000 server broke the world record for single-system performance on the TPC-C benchmark by registering 156,873.03 transactions per minute (tpmC) running Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) at a very economical $48.81 price/tpmC. Continuing its long time performance leadership, the Sun Enterprise 10000 Starfire server, has set or reset 40 benchmark records in its storied four-year history.

 US NSF Awards $2.3 Million grant for high-performance wireless network
The National Science Foundation has awarded a $2.3 million, three-year research grant to UC San Diego to create, demonstrate, and evaluate a non-commercial, prototype, high-performance, wide-area, wireless network for research and education. This is reported by "NPACI Online". Principals on the proposal are with the National Laboratory for Applied Network Research NLANR at SDSC, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography SIO.

 Sun and MSI to collaborate on on-line drug discovery
Sun Microsystems and Molecular Simulations a wholly owned subsidiary of Pharmacopeia strted a collaboration to deliver advanced dot-com grade solutions spanning the drug discovery pipeline. Sun and MSI will enable cheminformatics and bioinformatics researchers to deploy MSI's solutions across networked environments and through application service providers (ASPs). The collaboration aims to open new markets for MSI's bioinformatics and structural biology products.

 University of Kentucky installs HP N-4000 complex
The University of Kentucky is replacing its Hewlett-Packard SPP X-Class Exemplar supercomputer with a cluster of HP N-Class servers. Benchmarking of the new HP N-4000 complex placed the system 200th on the worlwide list of the top 500 supercomputing sites.

 Conoco builds 0.5 Tflop/s Linux cluster for petroleum industry
Conoco claims it installed the largest Intel-based geophysical computer available in today's petroleum industry. Conoco's new supercomputer is part of the company's state-of-the-art in-house seismic data processing system. It is 0.5 Tflop/s Linux based cluster.

 Essential Signs Exclusive Agreement With VIEO To License Gigabyte Networking Technology to VIEO
Essential Communications inked an agreement to license the rights to VIEO's Gigabyte System Network (GSN) technology. Under the terms of the agreement Essential has the exclusive right to develop and manufacture products based on VIEO's GSN technology. Essential will develop this technology to ensure that GSN is available for all the major platforms including Sun, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Cray and SGI.

 Alpha cluster at University of Calgary upgraded
The Compaq Alpha Cluster supercomputer at the University of Calgary is upgraded with more Alpha processors and is valued at more than CDN$2.3 million. It uses Compaq AlphaServers ES240 and DS20 systems and Compaq AlphaStation workstation systems running in a Compaq Tru64 UNIX.

 Problems with Internet 2 in Argentina
The future of Internet 2 in Argentina seems to be hampered by technical and economic questions. The Internet 2 exists in the country on paper, but telecom companies do not have the capacity to establish the links, and the State cannot back the investment needed. The supercomputer Clementina II that did cost 3.5 million euro, at the National Commission of Atomic Energy also suffers from this lack of fast access.

 Linux support centres from IBM in Pacific region
IBM today announced major Linux initiatives aimed at speeding the ability of Asia Pacific customers and key software vendors to increase productivity within the Linux operating environment.IBM will invest more than $200 million in the Asia Pacific region within the next four years on seven Linux Development Centers, Linux Competency Centers, alliances with Linux-focused business partners, Linux research and development and other programs, along with rapid deployment of more than 300 specialized Linux consultants, hardware and software specialists, researchers, product developers and services professionals.
