NEC sets 6.4 Terabits/second high density DWDM transmission capacity record
Researchers from NEC have set a new world record in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) by achieving an ultra-high transmission capacity of 6.4 Terabits/second per second (Tbps) over a single 186 km optical fiber. This transmission capacity is equivalent to sending one million motion pictures over a single fiber at one time, and almost doubles the previous record of 3.28 Tbps. NEC announced the test results Sept. 7 at the European Community Optical Communication Conference (ECOC) in Munich, Germany.

Exit R6/6000, S/390, AS400, - it is all IBM eServer from now on
IBM has changed the names of all of its server families to IBM eServer. The RS/6000 systems are now called pSeries, the AS400, iSeries, the S/390 zSeries and the Intel based servers xSeries. Although there is a clear tendency towards more compatibility, all systems will run Linux and Java, and technologies developed for one category were already adapted to the others, it remains to be seen whether it is worth changing all the well-known names. A disadvantage is also that the new server brand names are nor very recognisable nor very appealing or easy to remember.
