 Geneva Proteomics to use Compaq products and services
Geneva Proteomics Inc., ("GeneProt"), a Geneva based biotechnology company will use Compaq Computer Corp. as its exclusive IT partner. The two major research Proteomics factories are located in Geneva, Switzerland, and in the United States. As part of the agreement, GeneProt will use Compaq Global Services, StorageWorks storage systems, and high-end AlphaServer systems and Tru64 UNIX as the operating system. The contract value is expected to exceed $70 million (US) over a period of four years.

 Unravelling the origin and evolution of our galaxy
A group of researchers from the Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC) and the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), the Grupo Mecanica del Vuelo company (GMV), and the Centre de Supercomputacio de Catalunya (CESCA), have been selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) to do the first scientific, technical and computing design of GAIA's database. The primary science goal of the GAIA mission is to clarify the origin and history of the Milky Way.

 Doctoral theses on-line
TDC@T is a server that stores doctoral theses defended at the public universities of Catalonia (Spain) and allows remote access to the full document through Internet. This project, running from October 15, has been an initiative of the public universities of Catalonia, the Supercomputing Centre of Catalonia (CESCA) and the Consortium of Academic Libraries of Catalonia (CBUC).

 PACT unveils the eXtreme 32-bit 51.2 Gops processor platform
PACT Corporation unveiled the eXtreme Processor Platform (XPP) for advanced, processing-intensive high-bandwidth applications. Based on an innovative architecture, the eXtreme Processor enables designers to easily use massively parallel processing to reach unprecedented performance and bandwidth levels. The first eXtreme Processor, the XPU128, has demonstrated performance that is up to 50 times greater than conventional sequential processors and 20 times higher than digital signal processors (DSPs), which are basically sequential processors fine-tuned for signal processing. The first XPP device achieves sustainable peak performance in excess of 50 Giga Operations per second (GigaOps), making it the world's most powerful 32-bit processor.

 Funet to be upgraded to 2.5 gigabit capacity
The Finnish centre for high performance computing and networking CSC will speed up the Finnish University and Research Network Funet to 2.5 Gbps per second. The update is scheduled for completion at the beginning of 2001 and it will make Funet one of the world's most powerful data network providers for the field of research and academic education. Other academic networks with the same operational speed include Abilene of the American Internet2 and the Dutch Surfnet.

AMD demonstrated a multi-processor computer designed specifically to work with AMD processors. The demonstration, consisted of a computer powered by dual AMD Athlon processors, the AMD-760 MP chipset, and next-generation Double Data Rate (DDR) memory. The multi-processing computer demonstration featured 3D Studio Max, a professional 3D design and modelling application capable of increasing system performance by using both processors simultaneously.

 Mercury upgrades high altitude missile observatory
Mercury Computer Systems has delivered a RACE++ system valued at $1.4 million to Aeromet that will use the PowerPC "G4" based system to upgrade its High Altitude Observatory (HALO) aircraft under contract to the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC).

Cray and MSC.Software announced the first results of a collaboration programme for delivery to automakers.  Atipa joins the Linda Club
Atipa Corporation has joined The Linda Club, a new partnership initiative for Beowulf resellers sponsored by Scientific Computing Associates, Inc. (SCA), a leader in high-performance computing software. The Linda Club allows resellers to offer free to their customers a four-node Linux version of Linda, Scientific's programming language for parallel and distributed computing, when it is bundled with a Beowulf cluster.

 A portable version of the standard Linpack benchmark
HPL, a portable implementation of the high-performance Linpack Benchmark for distributed-memory computers has been released. It is written by Petitet, Whaley, Dongarra, and Cleary. It can be used to benchmark the performance of machines and use the results for comparison, or inclusion, in the TOP500 list of supercomputers.
