 Sixth International Conference on Parallel Computing Technologies opens call for papers
The Computing Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Academgorodok, Novosibirsk), Novosibirsk State University and Novosibirsk State Technical University are jointly organising the Sixth International Conference on Parallel Computing Technologies (PaCT-2001). The conference will be held in Novosibirsk, September 3-7, 2001. PaCT-2001 will give an overview of new developments, applications, and trends in parallel computing technologies.

 Cray and MCube team to attack automotive wind noise
Cray and MCube, a simulation software provider to manufacturers worldwide, will collaborate on next-generation automotive design, alleviating wind noise from side mirrors and driver's side window structures (`"A-pillars"), as well as exhaust system noise. The goal of the supercomputing collaboration is to help automakers to increase passenger cabin comfort.

 Sun's 3D-immersive virtual technology showcased at PTC's Warwick Collaboration Center
Sun Microsystems has demonstrated the first manifestation of its effort to develop flexible, scalable 3D solutions for the Collaborative Product Commerce (CPC) market. These solutions allow customers and system integrators to incorporate top quality virtual display technology at a fraction of the usual cost. The Sun Enterprise 450 workgroup servers, powered by the Sun Expert3 graphics accelerators, have been selected by PTC, the product development company and a leading provider of CPC solutions, to support its Collaboration Centre at the University of Warwick, UK.

 Compaq offers Compaq C++ Version 6.3 for Linux Alpha
Compaq offers the newest version 6.3 of its C++ compiler for Linux on Alpha systems. For non-commercial usage the compiler can be downloaded for free. There are several improvements bringing the compiler in the same quality range as those for traditional languages.

 New versions of ESI Group stamping simulation solution are now available
The new 2000 versions of ESI Group's stamping simulation software have been released. ESI Group solution enables users to simulate the stamping operations from the early design stage to the whole manufacturing process. It includes PAM-QUIKSTAMP, a rapid validation tool for part and design feasibility, PAM-DIEMAKER, a dedicated software for die addendum design, as well as OPTRIS and PAM-STAMP, two comprehensive validation stamping simulation tools.

 University of Hawaii to use new IBM supercomputer for meteorological research
The University of Hawaii (UH) introduced an IBM supercomputer code-named "Blue Hawaii" that will explore the inner workings of active hurricanes, helping university researchers develop a greater understanding of the forces driving these destructive storms. The IBM SP system, the first supercomputer ever installed at the University of Hawaii, is the result of an initiative by the Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC) in collaboration with IBM. This initiative has culminated in an innovative partnership between the university, MHPCC and IBM.

 IBM to build $300 million state-of-the-art chip packaging facility in China
IBM plans to invest $300 million to build an organic chip packaging manufacturing facility in Shanghai, China to support IBM's growing semiconductor business around the world. The facility is part of the recently announced $5 billion worldwide investment plan by IBM. The new facility will produce electronic cards and high technology chip carriers incorporating IBM's packaging technologies called Surface Laminar circuitry (SLC) and HyperBGA. The technologies are used in wired and wireless networking applications, Web servers and pervasive computing market segments.

 SGI posts net loss
SGI has announced financial results for its first quarter of fiscal 2001 ended September 30, 2000. For the quarter, the company posted revenue of $426 million compared with $514 million one year ago. The company reported a net loss of $49 million for the quarter compared with a net loss of $225 million for the same quarter one year ago.

 Record third quarter for Compaq Computer Corporation
Compaq reported worldwide revenue of US $11.2 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2000, an increase of 22 percent over the prior year period. Adjusted for the effects of currency, revenue grew 26 percent.

 US Federal Aviation Administration replaces aging computers with SGI Origin 200 Servers
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has purchased 104 SGI Origin 200 servers as part of a modernisation programme designed to upgrade Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR) systems at major airports around the United States.

 Raytheon wins $34 million contract to upgrade supercomputer laboratory
Raytheon Company has been awarded a $34 million contract to upgrade the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) supercomputer laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey. The upgrade is expected to improve the USA's climate prediction and weather forecasting capabilities.

 University of Houston receives $2 million to develop air quality forecasting model
The Environmental Protection Agency budget, which was passed by the U.S. Congress recently, includes $2 million for the University of Houston (UH) to research and develop an ozone simulation and forecasting model of the Houston and Gulf Coast region.
