Sun opens second production line for Starfire

Palo Alto 29 Nov 99 Sun Microsystems doubled manufacturing capacity by opening a second Starfire production line, this one housed at the company's Newark manufacturing plant. Fully operational since August of this year, the Newark line complements an existing Starfire production line located in Beaverton.

The Starfire production line at Newark accounts for approximately 20 percent of that facility's square footage. The added manufacturing muscle helps Sun to achieve the rapid order fulfillment vital to its mission-critical customers. In addition, the boosted capacity is creating economies of scale that make price breaks of as much as 15-18 percent possible, depending on configuration.

To help its customers meet urgent computing equipment needs in the unpredictable data center environment, Sun also recently introduced the new PowerExpress program. This fast-delivery option is designed to have pre-configured, pre-tested Starfire systems and components shipped to customers in as few as two weeks. For system boards, the order fulfillment time can be as short as two days.
