SuSE Linux 6.3 launches December 1st with a new graphic installation program, making it even easier to get into Linux now. With one DVD or six CD-ROMs, SuSE Linux provides a current and consistent Linux operating system with over 1500 application programs included.

This release features a revision of YaST, SuSE's powerful installation and administration tool. YaST2 guarantees the Linux newcomer an uncomplicated installation. The automatic hardware detection for PCI components and the menu-driven graphical interface enable the newcomer to set up a complete SuSE Linux, including KDE (desktop environment), within 20 minutes.

Users get a wealth of new software. SuSE Linux 6.3 includes 230 new programs and demos as well as 180 updated packages. Hummingbird Excced, the best X-server for Windows platforms, is included as a 60-day evaluation version for Windows 95/98. With Excced, you can run Linux programs under Windows on a Linux server. With the 30-day demo version of VMware 1.1.1., you can run programs from different operating systems on one computer - simultaneously. Users also get the demo versions of the popular games "Civilization - Call to Power" and "Railroad Tycoon II."

SuSE Linux 6.3 also provides the current KDE 1.1.2 - over 220 applications. This includes the substantially revised KDE Mail Client (kmail) as well as kfm. The most spectacular innovation of KDE 1.1.2 is the KDE Theme Manager, which lets you modify the entire appearance of the desktops with a mouse click. SuSE continues to provide the users with a choice of desktop - 6.3 includes GNOME 1.0.5 too.

SuSE Linux 6.3 features numerous innovations in hardware support: With the current XFree86 3.3.5, SuSE Linux 6.3 will also support the newest generation of graphics cards such as Savage3D, Savage4 and Trio 3D/2X. Brand-new features include the XFCom servers, written by SuSE, which raise the level of support for Intel i810 and all ATI 128 chips. There's always a place for experimental technology on SuSE too - with the help of a PPPoE driver (PPP over Ethernet), SuSE Linux can use ADSL technology for fast Internet access. There is experimental code supporting the IrDA log as well as the appropriate infrared interface.

SuSE Linux 6.3 contains significant new enhancements for using Linux as a server. SuSE Linux offers improved LDAP support for Linux and server related services such as www, ftp and proxy. New firewall scripts and the kernel module, secumod, also ensure increased security. A logical volume manager is integrated for the first time. With the SuSE Proxy Suite, a free firewall tool, SuSE is providing an open-source FTP proxy.
