IBM RS/6000 S80 fastest Java server

Somers 07 Jan 00 IBM announced that a six-way RS/6000 S80 server running the AIX operating system has set new records for Java performance and scalability, surpassing the previous record holder, containing three times more than the number of processors. The achievement establishes the S80 as the leading computing platform for Java server applications, says IBM.

P> In VolanoMark 2.1.2 local performance testing with 200 connections, a six-way RS/6000 S80 running Java 2 version 1.2.2 and AIX 4.3.3 transferred 33,906 messages per second per connection, a 35 percent increase over the previous top results posted a Sun E6500 server configured with 22 processors. The six-way S80 also beat the 22-way E6500 in the VolanoMark network scalability test. With 1000 connections, the S80 transferred 17,632 messages per second per connection, 61 percent faster than the Sun server. With 2100 connections, the S80 transferred 12,309 messages per second per connection, 40 percent faster than the Sun E6500.

In addition, the S80 established a new precedent as the only system to successfully test at 5000 connections on VolanoMark, transferring 6,162 messages per second per connection. The S80 system was equipped with just 4 gigabytes (GB) of memory versus 30GB in the Sun system.

VolanoMark is a 100 percent pure Java server benchmark that measures the speed of the Java platform and accurately predicts real-world Java performance and scalability. The test has become increasingly important as e-business customers rapidly deploy Java environments as a key component of their server applications.
