New Linux tools from SGI

Mountain View 31 Jan 00 SGI announced several additions to the company's portfolio of Linux operating systems offerings, including the introduction of a new SGI Internet server, SGI Advanced Clustering Environment and global Linux services.

These announcements support SGI's dual-platform strategy in which the company offers both Intel and Linux as well as MIPS and IRIX solutions to expand its leadership in visual and technical computing.

SGI now offers a comprehensive portfolio of Linux service, support and education products that are integral to its solutions approach to providing customer value. Based on SGI hardware, software, professional services and partnerships, the new set of services ranges from Linux clustering and technology migration services to custom Linux business programs. These are:

  • Eight new SGI Linux Managed Services focused on system deployment, implementation and administration. Based on standard service descriptions and delivered according to proven methodologies, these services are designed to improve productivity and help customers focus on their core competencies.

  • Full support for the six leading Linux distributions running on the Intel IA32 platform. SGI offers its entire portfolio of support services for Red Hat, Turbo Linux, Suse, Mandrake, Debian, and Caldera.

  • A full suite of worldwide Linux technical training courses delivered anywhere - either at customer sites, in SGI Training Centers or via the Web. In addition to custom courses, standard curriculum includes system and network administration, GUI programming, clustering, security and Linux internals. SGI also offers four courses designed to help students prepare for the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) certification testing.

The SGI Internet Server is designed for the rapidly growing Internet market space. Based on the powerful SGI 1200 thin server platform, the SGI Internet Server is a low entry cost, rack-and-stack solution combining the convenience of an appliance with the flexibility of an open system. Designed specifically for ISPs, application service providers (ASPs) and co-location facilities seeking a fully supported, cost-effective solution with quick deployment and ease of installation, the SGI Internet Server includes Internet-specific management, monitoring and security tools with integrated basic services for Web serving and messaging.

    The SGI Internet Server includes:

  • Preinstalled, fully supported tools for quick installation, easy monitoring and remote, lights-out administration

  • Web-based tools to streamline installation, troubleshooting and networking

  • Bastille Hardening Program lockdown scripts to secure configuration and protect against unauthorized use

  • TripWire intrusion detection software that actively monitors configuration files to safeguard from corruption or tampering

  • Integrated basic services for Web serving and messaging

  • Preinstalled Apache Web Server plus SGI performance enhancements, providing a significant increase in performance for Web hosting environments

    SGI Linux Advanced Cluster Environment

With the recent introduction of the SGI Advanced Cluster Environment (ACE), an economical solution for compute-intensive environments, SGI extends its leadership in technical computing. At LinuxWorld, the company will debut the SGI Linux ACE, a new generation of high-performance clusters built on industry-standard SGI 1000 series servers. Other examples include the 132-processor SGI 1400L cluster at the Ohio Supercomputer Center and the first Intel Itanium processor-based cluster recently demonstrated by SGI, Intel and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the SuperComputing '99 conference.

Designed for bioinformatics, education and research, energy and electronic design automation, SGI Linux ACE brings together SGI's heritage in scalable computing with the latest developments from the Open Source Software community. The result is an integrated, high-performance and robust technical compute cluster solution with the industry's lowest total cost of ownership.

The SGI Linux ACE consists of a suite of programming, management and performance tools, services and support to provide a high-performance compute cluster. ACE implementation services, including installation and configuration, are available to get users up and running quickly. ACE is fully backed by SGI's Global Services organization, and customers with SGI support contracts receive regular software updates and technology improvements to stay on the cutting edge of Linux compute clustering.

Introducing the New SGI 1200 Server

The solutions that will debut at LinuxWorld are based on the new SGI 1200 server. Hitting the sweet spot of the Linux market, the SGI 1200 server line is an ideal platform for supporting rapidly growing Internet serving environments and technical compute clusters. With a 2U form factor (3.5 inches), up to 19 SGI 1200 servers fit in an industry-standard rack. SGI 1200 comes preinstalled with Red Hat Linux 6.1 and the SGI ProPack for Linux 1.2 and is equipped with one or two Intel Pentium III processors, up to 2GB SDRAM memory, and up to four Ultra2 SCSI disks.

SGI ProPack for Linux 1.2 for Red Hat Linux 6.1

SGI ProPack for Linux, formerly referred to as SGI Linux Environment, is an easily installable value-added layer to the Red Hat Linux 6.1 distribution. Fully qualified and supported for SGI 1400L and SGI 1200L servers, SGI ProPack for Linux provides significant performance and reliability enhancements for enterprise-class Linux applications.

Building on SGI's extensive experience in developing robust and powerful multiprocessor UNIX systems, SGI ProPack for Linux features technology recently released by the company to the Open Source Software community.

    Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the SGI Internet Server starts at under $4,600 U.S. list and features a 550 MHz Intel Pentium III processor, 128MB RAM, 9GB drive with preinstalled Red Hat Linux 6.1, SGI ProPack for Linux 1.2, integrated Internet serving tools and worldwide technical support. The product is expected to be available later this quarter.

Pricing for the SGI Linux ACE starts at $125,000 U.S. list for a typical configuration including 16 SGI 1200 servers (for a total of 32 processors), SGI Linux Advanced Cluster Environment software, 100Base-T interconnect and implementation services.
