Veritas increases its computational capacity to delive more seismic data

Toronto 27 Jan 00 Veritas DGC Inc. is substantially increasing its global capability to deliver and interpret enormous volumes of 3D seismic data with the installation of three new-generation NEC SX-5 supercomputers and three additional data visualization centers.y April, the Company will begin installation of a third SX-5 in its London, U.K., processing centre.

As previously announced, Veritas successfully deployed a new NEC SX-5 supercomputer in its Singapore processing center, and is currently installing a second SX-5 in its Houston processing center. In addition, Veritas opened its second data visualization center on February 1st, also at its London office, followed by another in its Calgary, Canada office in March, and another in its Perth, Australia office in April. With its existing center in Houston, Veritas will soon have a total of four data visualization centers.

"These installations collectively represent a major commitment by Veritas to offer our customers the most advanced data processing and interpretation technologies available today," said Tim Wells, President and Chief Operating Officer of Veritas.

The NEC SX-5, considered one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world, now becomes the backbone of Veritas' global computer resource. The three new SX-5's will run the latest seismic imaging algorithms to deliver the most advanced seismic images possible, in faster time frames than ever before. Complementing this leap in processing horsepower, Veritas' new data visualization centers will enable rapid, three-dimensional volumetric interpretation of complex exploration data. "The oil and gas exploration industry is undergoing a fundamental paradigm shift in the way data are analyzed," explained Colin Murdoch, Senior Vice President of Technology for Veritas. "Never before has the technology existed to allow geoscientists to visually interact with such complex volumes of 3D information in virtual real-time."

Veritas, the first geophysical contractor to install a data visualization center, is taking an aggressive approach in spearheading this leading technology and making it available to its customers worldwide. The Veritas visualization centers utilize the latest interpretation software and powerful hardware designed to handle massive volumes of data, co-rendering of multiple data sets and large traffic flows. The Company has also tailored these centers for multi-disciplinary teams of geoscientists to be able to collaborate as a group and collectively interact with the data to develop a common understanding of the geology. "Shortening interpretation time is the bottom line," says Dale Bowering, President of Veritas' exploration services division. "Our increased compute power and data visualization capabilities now integrate a whole suite of services to help our customers make better exploration decisions faster."

Veritas DGC Inc., headquartered in Houston, Texas, is a leading provider of integrated geological and geophysical technologies to the petroleum industry worldwide.
