Compaq Canada And The University of Western Ontario Establish Centre For Computational Research

Toronto 23 Mar 00 Compaq Canada announced that it has partnered with The University of Western Ontario to establish the (CDN) $1.6 million Compaq-Western Centre for Computational Research. The Compaq-Western Centre for Computational Research harnesses the power of 70 Compaq Alpha processors installed in Compaq AlphaServer ES40 and Compaq AlphaStation systems running in a pure Linux operating system and Beowulf cluster environment. The research centre, an arm of the University's Faculty of Science, offers the largest academic installation of Compaq Alpha processors in Canada for research and development purposes.

As part of the agreement, Compaq and The University of Western Ontario have co-invested (CDN) $1.6 million towards the installation of high-performance Compaq Alpha technology-based server and workstation systems at the University. Compaq will be a partner with the University over the next five years.

"Western has long been recognized as a leader in the field of science and research," says Dr. Paul Davenport, President, The University of Western Ontario. "By implementing a world-class supercomputer installation, we are extending our leadership in this area and enhancing Canada's international reputation in scientific research."

Supporting the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering, the installation of the Linux operating system on the Compaq AlphaServer systems began testing in November 1999. The systems have substantially contributed to the progress of six research projects, with plans to expand the scope of research in the next six months.

"Traditionally, Canadian researchers have had to look outside Canada to be involved in a major supercomputer-based research environment," says Peter Ciceri, President & Managing Director, Compaq Canada Inc. "Compaq Canada is pleased to be involved with a project involving a leading educator that will keep the best minds in the country here - as well as attract top researchers from around the world."

Organizational Backgrounds The University of Western Ontario is a vibrant centre of learning with 1,250 faculty members, 1,800 support staff and more than 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Through its 12 Faculties and Schools and three affiliated Colleges, the University offers more than 50 degree and diploma programs.

Research is an integral part of Western's mission. External support for research projects total approximately $80 million a year, making Western one of Canada's top 10 research universities. More than 2,000 research projects are currently in progress at the University, ranging from medical and scientific research to policy studies in Social Science and Business and creative work in the Arts and Humanities.
