Milinx next-generation ASP powered by Sun
Seattle 27 Apr 00 Milinx Business Group, Inc, an Application Service Provider (ASP) entered into an agreement with Sun Microsystems, Inc. As part of the agreement, Milinx will also leverage Internet infrastructure software from iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, for its new next-generation ASP service package
Through the agreement, Sun Microsystems is to provide state-of-the-art hardware and software, and iPlanet is to provide its market-leading unified messaging software as part of Milinx's leading-edge ASP package. The Milinx ASP solutions are anticipated to launch in June 2000, establishing first-mover advantage in the explosive ASP marketplace. ASPs manage and deliver software applications from remote data centers via a private network, which Milinx believes will make the outright purchase of software obsolete in favor of renting or leasing for a fraction of the cost. Analysts believe the ASP market, in which software and computing power are delivered over the Internet and rented by businesses, is poised to displace traditional packaged software to become the pre-eminent business computing model of the next decade. Industry analysts Forrester Research estimates that the ASP market is expected to reach US$21 billion by 2003, while the Gartner Group places the market at US$22 billion. Milinx's state-of-the-art data center, located in Vancouver, Canada, will deploy the Sun Enterprise servers and Sun StorEdge products running the robust Solaris operating environment. The Sun platform will serve as the network computing infrastructure which will power the company's initial ASP operations. The Vancouver data center, with its opening planned for early June 2000, is the first of five planned for Milinxs global operations.
