Chinese national supercomputer centre opened

Bejing 25 July 2000 According to the Xinhua news agency, the Beijing High-Performance Computer Application Centre, China's first state-level computer application and development base, has been opened. Also a new Shenwei-1 computer, the largest of its kind in China, to the public, according to official sources, has been inaugurated. The supercomputer, with a peak performance of 384 Gflop/s per second, could make it into the TOP100 of fastest machines in the world.

The Chinese-developed supercomputer was put into use last September, when President Jiang Zemin wrote an inscription for the event and Vice-Premier Li Lanqing attended the ceremony to mark its operation.

The supercomputer has been hailed a successful by Chinese scientists in developing computers despite restrictions imposed by some Western countries.

Outsiders can use the supercomputer free of charge in the first two years, according to Zeng Peiyan, minister in charge of the State Development Planning Commission.

The second Shenwei-1 computer is expected to be put into operation in the Shanghai Super Computing Center, which will become the second state-level computer application and development base in China.
