The Cray T3E-1200E order is part of a contract administered by
system integrator Fujitsu for JAIST's Information Environment System.
The system will be installed in JAIST's Center for Information
Science, where it will be used to support leading-edge research in
information science and other advanced scientific research. The Cray
T3E-1200E computer system replaces an earlier Cray T3E-600 system sold
by the former Cray Research.
"Our faculty and student researchers will use the more powerful
Cray T3E-1200E system to promote basic and applied information
science, including computational science," said Professor Teruo
Matsuzawa, director of the Center for Information Science.
"We are proud to be associated with JAIST and to support the
world-class research faculty of the Center for Information Science,"
said Cray Inc. President and CEO Jim Rottsolk. "We view our
relationship with JAIST as a true partnership."
The current world record for sustained computer speed, more than
one trillion calculations per second (teraflops), was achieved on a
Cray T3E system and has been recognised with the prestigious Gordon
Bell Prize.
The Japan Advanced Institute Of Science And Technology (JAIST),
Hokuriku, Japan, was founded on October 1, 1990 as the first national
institute in Japan that consists of graduate schools without
undergraduate programs and possesses its own campus and organisation
for research and education. JAIST's Center for Information Science
supports the computer-oriented activities of all users of the campus
computing environment, by administering computer facilities and
interconnecting networks.
