Dell and Unisys collaborate on 32 processor system

San Diego 29 November 2000 Unisys have signed a letter of intent for Dell to market a 32-processor Dell PowerEdge server based on the Unisys Cellular MultiProcessing (CMP) server architecture.

The new system will complement existing Dell server and storage offerings by providing customers with a powerful and extremely scalable option for data-intensive computing environments. Additionally, as a Dell-branded server, customers will receive the same high levels of award-winning services that they would with any other Dell server.

The 32-way Dell PowerEdge server will offer customers new levels of reliability, availability and scalability for industry standard platforms. Designed to address the needs of very high end enterprise computing, the system provides flexibility and high performance while allowing customers to scale on one system as their business needs grow. The system can function under a single operating system or can be partitioned to run multiple instances of various operating systems.

The Unisys CMP server design supports Intel Pentium III Xeon technology and will accommodate Intel's Itanium processor technology when it becomes available. The system can support up to 96 PCI channels and leading edge storage subsystems, such as Dell PowerVault storage systems. Dell expects 32-processor PowerEdge servers to be available in the first quarter of next year.
