STN ATLAS selects Onyx 3000 to develop Swiss Army's Electronic Tactical Simulator

Bremen 27 November 2000 STN ATLAS Elektronik GmbH, Bremen, Germany, has selected the SGI Onyx 3000 series as the graphics system platform for the Swiss Army's Electronic Tactical Simulator for Mechanized Formations (ELTAM) program.

As part of a multimillion-dollar contract approved by the Swiss Parliament under its 1999 Arms Program, STN ATLAS will supply a large-scale simulation system to the Swiss Army for combined arms combat training at the squadron and battalion level. The ELTAM system will encompass all command and control operations as well as military engagements performed in real time in a virtual battle scenario.

Once the simulation system is installed and delivered to the Swiss Army in October 2001, it will be impossible for trainees to distinguish between military units actually involved in a virtual battle and units simulated by the SGI Onyx 3000 series graphics systems. SGI will supply four SGI Onyx 3400 graphics systems with four graphics pipes and four three-pipe SGI Onyx 3400 systems to be used for the full mission tank simulators.

"We selected SGI Onyx 3400 because only this series of high-performance graphics systems has the power and real-time visualization capabilities required to meet the needs of the Swiss Army," said Ulrich Sasse, head of the Simulation Systems Division, STN ATLAS.

The recently released SGI Onyx 3000 series, which includes SGI Onyx 3400, is the world's most powerful visualization system series, providing breathtaking performance. Designed to simultaneously process 3D graphics, 2D imagery and video data, the SGI Onyx 3000 series scales from single-user systems to those that combine the ultimate in supercomputing and visualization technologies.

As part of the ELTAM system, instructors will have a bird's-eye view of the virtual battle scenario as it unfolds from any point in the terrain. In addition, the scenario can be observed by instructors through tank optical systems such as periscopes and angular mirrors.

SGI is also supplying 22 Silicon Graphics Octane2 visual workstations for the ELTAM part-task trainers. The Silicon Graphics Octane2 visual workstation delivers more visualization power than any other UNIX desktop workstation. Octane2 combines the groundbreaking, next-generation VPro 3D graphics system, the latest high-performance MIPS processor and industry-leading system bandwidth in an affordable power desktop package.

Due to the modular and coherent design of the ELTAM simulator, components such as additional workstations for co-trainees or new combat compartments can be added without having to change the system concept. The computer components of the system are linked via an FDDI network.

STN ATLAS Elektronik GmbH specializes in the manufacture and supply of electronics equipment and systems for applications within the defense industry.
