SAP Application Server on IBM S/390
Las vegas 15 August 2000 SAP AG and IBM announced general availability of the SAP Application Server functions on IBM's S/390 Enterprise Server.
The SAP Application Server solution will join the existing SAP Database Server solution to meet the needs of large enterprise customers. In response to market requirements for architectural flexibility, SAP and IBM have designed the SAP Application Server to work side by side with existing Application Server platforms. This flexibility enables customers to exploit the S/390's high availability, reliability, scalability and performance while enjoying a low total cost of ownership. The SAP Application Server functionality will soon be available for other mySAP.com solutions as well. The existing Lotus Domino, MQ Series and Visual Age Java SAP Connectors will also be available for the SAP Application Server on S/390.
The functionality of the SAP Application Server on S/390 had been validated by early shipments to more than 30 customers. "We joined the Controlled Availability program of the SAP Application Server on S/390 because we wanted to utilize S/390's traditional strengths also for mission-critical application server processes," said Walter Rotter, OMV AG in Austria. "The opportunity to mix S/390 and RS/6000 application servers with a S/390 database server enables us to customize a solution that exactly meets our requirements in terms of availability, performance, and scalability. At the same time, we optimize our total cost of computing. We are very satisfied with our first experiences in the Controlled Availability program of the SAP Application Server on S/390."
