JCI develops next gen optical networking collaboration tools on SGI 3000

Los Angeles 28 September 2000 JCI Corporation, provider of the FIRELINE digital collaboration tools in the production and distribution of digital cinema, will develop its next-generation scalable broadband tools using the SGI platform. In a cooperative agreement, JCI Corporation and its technology partners, including optical network supplier, Lucent Technologies, will leverage new modular computing technology and storage area networking solutions from SGI to provide uncompressed high-definition and real-time interactive networking to the entertainment industry.

JCI Corporation, through its FIRELINE suite of products and SGI, will collaborate on creating and providing scalable on-demand services to facilitate the transport of and collaboration on resolution-independent files for the production and post-production of visual effects, animation and compositing. Initially, this will take place between facilities already equipped in Los Angeles, New York and Toronto, with more cities in North America and Europe to be added over the next year as testing is completed.

JCI provides a secure extranet environment between facilities working on the same project, and between distributors and exhibitors as a cost-effective and efficient alternative to commercial couriers, satellite and dedicated carriers or virtual private networks. The company also provides terabytes of secure managed storage for media companies wishing to distribute material to multiple locations.

SGI will collaborate with JCI and its partners on the engineering required to bring next-generation services to its customers in the production and post-production community at the highest speeds possible across continents.
