CART selects SGI media streaming and digital content creation solutions to promote real-world learning
Mountain View 20 October 2000 The Center for Advanced Research and Technology (CART) has selected SGI media streaming and digital content creation solutions as key components of its innovative educational programme designed to combat the high student drop-out and unemployment rates in California's Central Valley. The CART programme is designed as a supplementary curriculum to provide high school students with the opportunity to acquire the real-world technology skills critical for success in
today's high-tech work force and higher education environments. This is particularly significant in the Fresno/Clovis area, where close to 20 percent of students drop out of high school and the unemployment rate is 14 percent.
More than 1200 students in the CART programme will use SGI Media Commerce solutions to learn and practice research, critical thinking, analysis, synthesis and evaluation skills while participating in corporate-sponsored real-world projects. By employing the latest telecommunications and technology innovations, CART students will become self-directed learners and develop
entrepreneurial, communication and project management skills.
The CART programme utilises more than $2.1 million in SGI equipment and Professional Services, including two SGI Origin 2000 servers with Kasenna MediaBase, 10 Silicon Graphics 230 visual workstations, a Silicon Graphics O2 visual workstation and 2 TB of fiber-optic storage.
SGI Media Server systems with Kasenna MediaBase, capable of delivering more than 2000 MPEG streams, will be used for distance learning and learning-on-demand and to power a media wall for internal and external audiences. The media wall can display either 12 individual images or a single
image. In the CART multimedia labs, students will learn 2D and 3D animation and editing and compositing on the Silicon Graphics 230 visual workstations, preparing them for exciting jobs in the digital content creation marketplace.
