Market Data confirms Dell's leadership in U.S. education market
Round Rock 20 Oct 2000 Recently released market data confirms Dell is No. 1 in the U.S. education market, ahead of both Windows-based vendors and Apple Computer Corporation. Dell has worked with a wide range of education customers recently to provide innovative network and server solutions.
For example:
The Round Rock, Texas, Independent School District has begun a programme with Dell to provide students throughout the district with wireless access to the Internet and e-mail using "rolling labs" that travel from classroom to classroom. The labs contain up to 30 Dell Latitude notebooks and a wireless access point. The students remove a notebook from the cart,
bring it back to their desk, and have wireless access to the Internet and e-mail, right at their desktop.
Dell's server cluster located at the Cornell Theory Center, Cornell University's high performance computing and research center, was named one of the top 500 supercomputer sites in the world. Nicknamed "Velocity", the cluster of 64 Dell PowerEdge 6350 servers enables researchers at Cornell to study complex, real-world applications previously reserved for multimillion-dollar supercomputers or mainframes.
At Ohio State University, the College of Humanities intends to use Dell systems to outfit its World Media and Culture Center, a world-class facility bringing live information from around the world to Ohio State students. The center plans to use a variety of Dell products, including wireless notebook products throughout the facility.
The Boulder Valley School District in Colorado has developed the "Millennium Lab", a unique technology facility enabling students to develop skills in more than 40 different disciplines, such as animation systems, biomechanics, prototyping, engineering, computer aided design and satellite communications. Students will use Dell OptiPlex desktop systems in the Millennium Lab to explore these wide-ranging topics.
