SGI posts net loss

Mountain View 23 Oct 2000 SGI has announced financial results for its first quarter of fiscal 2001 ended September 30, 2000. For the quarter, the company posted revenue of $426 million compared with $514 million one year ago. The company reported a net loss of $49 million for the quarter compared with a net loss of $225 million for the same quarter one year ago.

Order momentum for the company was led by its new line of high-end systems, the SGI Origin 3000 and SGI Onyx 3000 series, which were launched earlier this summer and utilise the unique scalable and modular SGI NUMAflex architecture.

"Our data shows a significant opportunity for scalable architectures, particularly those that are built around the concept of modularity", stated Debra Goldfarb, group vice president, IDC, an industry-leading market research firm. "According to feedback we have received from end users, the NUMAflex modular architecture strongly positions SGI to take advantage of this important trend and is prompting customers to re-engage with the company."

The company also generated strong orders for its new Silicon Graphics Octane2desktop graphics workstation.
