Bioinformatics company Bristol-Myers Squibb installs Linux clusters
Mountain View 21 November 2000 SGI installed a Linux based bioinformatics computing system at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, a health and personal care company. Bristol-Myers Squibb will use the Linux to conduct research for genomics projects, including DNA and protein sequence analysis, transcriptional profiling, and proteomics, one of the fastest growing segments of bioinformatics research.
The solution developed for the Bristol-Myers Squibb bioinformatics research group integrates Incyte's Linux cluster with an SGI Origin 2000 server. Linking the cluster to the SGI Origin family server allows researchers to run specific applications in the Linux environment, freeing up resources on the SGI Origin 2000 server for applications that require intense threading or larger amounts of shared memory. The Linux solution increases Bristol-Myers Squibb's ability to run analyses and eliminates the administrative overhead of transferring data and calculations between computing platforms, making users more efficient.
