Doctoral theses on-line
Barcelona 10 Oct 2000 TDC@T is a server that stores doctoral theses defended at the public universities of Catalonia (Spain) and allows remote access to the full document through Internet. This project, running from October 15, has been an initiative of the public universities of Catalonia, the Supercomputing Centre of Catalonia (CESCA) and the Consortium of Academic Libraries of Catalonia (CBUC).
TDC@T is a server that allows remote access to doctoral theses stored in electronic format, and also ensures that the document will be electronically preserved. The theses are saved as a pdf document, so the document's integrity is warranted and the file can be printed in its original format.
CESCA has been responsible for the adaptation and implementation of the software needed, which was originally designed by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD). This international federation is an initiative to improve graduate education, increase sharing of knowledge, help universities build their information infrastructure, and extend the value of digital libraries. CESCA has also collaborated in this project hosting the server and storing the theses in its HP N4000 supercomputer.
The project has been coordinated by CBUC. "The inclusion of TDC@T in the NDLTD project ensures its continuity and adaptation to the new standards for publication in Internet that are being developed, as introduction of metadata and XML (eXtended Markup Language)", said Ramon Ros, CBUC's systems manager.
