Fujitsu Siemens gets new SAP R/3 SD record with 23 000 users, using Primepower and Primergy running Linux

Munich 11 December 2000 Fujitsu Siemens Computer (FSC) sets new records in SAP SD (Sales and Distribution) benchmark with 23 000 users, the first time more than the 20 000 users barrier. FSC used is flagship the Primepower 2000, 64 Sparc64 Processor system running Solaris 8, as the database server and 161 application servers based on Primergy H400, 4-processor SMP running RedHat Linux 6.1.

On December 8, Fujitsu Siemens Computer announced in a Press Conference together with SAP and EMC that it broke the 20 000 users barrier in the SAP R/3 SD benchmark. As the database server FSC installed a Primepower 2000, a 64-processor SMP with Sparc64 processors, developed by its own US-based daughter HAL. The processors clock at 450 MHz. The Primepower has 8 MB L2 cache and 64 GB main memory. The 160 Primergy H400/N400, the 4-processor SMPs, have different sizes but a main memory of 4 GB each. All computers use Pentium III Xeon processors with 700 MHz. 98 dialog servers have 1 MB, 29 2 MB L2 cache am 13 use N400 with 2 MB L2 cache. The update servers are divided in 13 H400 with 1 MB, 5 H400 with 2 MB and 2 N400 with 2 MB Level 2 cache. An other Primergy N800 with 8 processors Pentium III Xeon 700 MHz, 2 MB L2 Cache and 8 GB main memory was used as the message and enqueue server. Thus in total FSC used 648 Intel Pentium III processors as application servers.

The Primepower as the database server ran Solaris 8, while the Primergy used Linux, RedHat 6.1. It is the first time that within the SAP environment business critical applications of that record-braking size ran Linux.

Using the tool "One Touch Installation (OTI)" developed by its sister Siemens Business Services each Linux computer was configured, partitioned and SAP-ready within 15 minutes.

The average dialog response time was 1.73 seconds. The throughput summed up to 2 353 670 processed order line items per hour. This is equivalent to 7 061 000 dialog steps per hour. The average database request time was 0.075 second dialog and 0.242 update request time The CPU utilisation of the database server was 96% and of the application server 60%, dialog 60%, update 64%, message/enqueue 22%.

FSC used the very new version of SAP R/3, reseals v4.6B, which has more features and uses more compute power. Following Dr. Joseph Reger, Vice President Strategic Marketing Fujitsu Siemens Computer, these results are not directly comparable with the recently published results in SAP's white paper, as the old versions are not so resources hungry. FSC Choose Oracle 8.1.6 as its database software.

The totally used disk space summed up to 1.344 TeraByte. EMC delivered two Symmetrix (8730-36) Enterprise Storage and two Connectrix (ED-1032) the disk infrastructure. The partners used standard solution, thus installing Ethernet as the interconnect between the different systems instead of faster solutions like Dolphin. For the disks they installed a small Fibre Fabric.

It is important to mention that the Primepower 2000 and the other models follow with its processors, the Sparc64, the Sparc/Solaris specifications of the Sparc International Consortium as well as SUN Soft, which prescribes the Solaris development. Thus Solaris binaries run without any changes on this platform.
