 IBM to install 128 processor SP system for Dutch research
The Free University in Amsterdam (VU) and the Foundation Dutch National Computing Facilities (NCF) have decided to install a 192 Glop/s 128-CPU IBM RS6000/SP system replacing a 76 processors system. Another 12 processors will be installed for special purposes. Hence, the system will initially have 140 processors with a peak performance of 210 Gflop/s.

 PaCT-2001 second call for papers
The Computing Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Academgorodok, Novosibirsk), Novosibirsk State University and Novosibirsk State Technical University issued a second call for papers for the the Sixth International Conference on Parallel Computing Technologies (PaCT-2001). The conference will be held in Novosibirsk, September 3-7, 2001.

 FZ Juelich to use multi-pipe AVS/Express
The Central Institute for Applied Mathematics (ZAM), part of the FZ Juelich Research Centre in Germany, has selected the Multi-Pipe Edition of AVS/Express from Advanced Visual Systems for use in its immersive visualization laboratory. The FZ Juelich facility, boasting a staff of 4,300 researchers, is devoted to basic and applied research in various fields of science and technology and is investigating current issues in the areas of matter, information, life, environment, and energy. It is one of the largest research institutions in Europe.

Visual Numerics has ported its IMSL Fortran 90 Library to NEC Corp.'s SX-5 supercomputer, bringing to seven the total number of supercomputing platforms supported by the Library.

 Cray receives governemnt orders and raised $12.5 million funding
Cray received $22.8 million in new orders from US government customers. The orders call for installation of Cray T3E supercomputer technology valued at approximately $21 million in the first quarter of 2001, and Cray SV1 supercomputer technology now through mid-2001.

 Hewlett-Packard starts shipment of Superdome
Hewlett-Packard announced that it has begun worldwide, volume shipments of its HP 9000 Superdome server. Unveiled in September, the high-end UNIX server is the world's most powerful, flexible and available UNIX computing platform, the company claims.

 Mylex Ultra 160 RAID Controllers earn certifications for a number of operating systems
RAID controller manufacturer Mylex, an IBM subsidiary, announced that its AcceleRAID 352 and AcceleRAID 170 Ultra 160 SCSI RAID controllers have recently earned certifications for Windows, Solaris and other operating systems.

 DmSDK available in open source for Linux
The source code for SGI's digital media software development kit (dmSDK) for the Linux operating environment is now available to the open source community. The dmSDK toolkit shortens the time required to create digital media applications across the SGI product line by allowing SGI software partners to write to a single application programming interface (API).

 NSF grant extends support for interconnecting national research networks in the USA
The US National Science Foundation has awarded $2.5 million dollars to the National Laboratory for Applied Network Research (NLANR) to continue technical, engineering and traffic analysis support to the high-performance networking and applications communities. The grant extends by one year NLANR's original three year cooperative agreement to support universities and institutions in connecting to the nation's research networks.

 BioNumerik acquires 32-process Cray SV1
Cray did get an order for a 32-processor Cray SV1 supercomputer from BioNumerik Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The order includes an option to acquire future Cray technologies. The machine will be used to do research on cancer-fighting drugs
