 Training and Research on Advanced Computing Systems (TRACS)
Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC) is co-ordinating an EC-funded project to bring European researchers for short visits to associated departments in Edinburgh to collaborate on projects involving High Performance Computing (HPC). Dead-line for application is February 14.

The (Mannheim) Heidelberg Supercomputer Conference programme is available. The programme starts with a keynote "Nomadic Computing and Smart Spaces" by Leonard Kleinrock and closes with "The post Moore's Law era: Quantum Computing" by Peter Zoller.

 HP European Solution Centre for finacial markets
Hewlett-Packard opened a new HP European Solution Centre for capital markets, based in London. The HP European Solution Centre is expected to provide customers and partners with a full lifecycle solution from pre-installation sizing, configuration, integration and proof-of-concept testing to total solution support, resulting in faster deployment rates and a significant drop in client incurred expenses. The HP European Solution Centre is now available for HP's mission-critical financial services solutions in the areas of electronic trading, treasury management, securities processing and e-banking.

 SAIC in the USA upgrades FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System with SGI superservers
Science Applications International (SAIC) has installed two eight-processor SGI 2000 series servers to power the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), which helps prevent the transfer of handguns and long guns from licensed gun dealers to felons and other individuals prohibited by US law. In addition, two 16-processor SGI Origin 3000 series systems will be installed this summer as part of the FBI's upgrade strategy for NICS.

 Lockheed selects Onyx2 visualization system with InfiniteReality3 for US airforce flight simulator
Lockheed Martin has selected for the U.S. Air Force Air Education and Training Command and the Air Force Research Laboratory, a 24-processor, 10-pipe Silicon Graphics Onyx2 visualization system with InfiniteReality3 graphics subsystem to upgrade the F-16 flight simulators at the Network Training Center facility, Luke Air Force Base, Glendale USA.

 Aachen University of Technology (RWTH) buys 2 Tflop/s SUN system
The RWTH, a leading technical university in Aachen, Germany, will install a 2 Tflop/s SUN supercomputer. This TOP500 class of machine will be the largest SUN supercomputer in the world. The 5 million euro machine, financed by the German federal government and the country of Northrine-Westfalia, will be installed in three phases, starting in April this year. SUN and RWTH will also enter into a cooperation with respect to computational fluid dynamics, one of the specialities at Aachen.

 HP introduces new mid-range servers
Hewlett-Packard introduced the HP e3000 A- and N-class servers, which deliver up to 65 percent more performance than previous HP e3000 servers. The large system, the mid-range 12-way 997 server. offers up to 4-way multi-processing with 550 MHz processors and supports up to 16 GByte of memory.

 MPI Software Technology released of MPI/Pro 1.6.3
MPI Software Technology released of MPI/Pro Version 1.6.3. MPI/Pro supports Linux for TCP and VIA (Giganet only) networks and PowerPC, x86, and Alpha processors. MPI/Pro Version 1.6.3 for Windows NT/2000 runs on TCP and VIA (both Servernet II and Giganet) for x86 systems. Pre-release versions of MPI/Pro Version 1.6.3 supporting Myrinet and Solaris are also available.

 Cray plans Alpha Linux supercluster systems
Cray says it will lanch Alpha Linux supercluster systems in the coming months and is scheduled to begin shipping in the mid-2001 timeframe. The company has received an early order agreement from BioNumerik Pharmaceuticals and expects to announce multiple orders by the time of the product launch.

  Terascale Computing System comes on-line at Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center
The new Terascale Computing System (TCS) funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) has begun operation well ahead of schedule and is exceeding performance expectations. The high-performance computing system - funded at $36 million, plus $9 million over three years for operating costs - will eventually exceed 6 Tflop/s, making it the world's fastest for civilian research. The initial TCS configuration has 64 interconnected Compaq ES40 Alphaservers, each of which features four EV67 microprocessors.

 New SGI 1100 low-end server
SGI announced the new SGI 1100 server , a dual Intel Pentium III processor-capable server that supports the Linux, Windows 2000 and Windows NT operating systems. The SGI 1100 server supports up to two Pentium III 800 MHz or 1 GHz processors and features a 133 MHz front-side bus and up to 2 GByte of memory for exceptional flexibility as an Internet, digital publishing or rendering server or as a compute node in a cluster, using SGI's Advanced Clustering Environment.

 Buffalo installs SGI Linux cluster
The University at Buffalo's Centre for Computational Research (CCR in the USA, will install a 52-processor Linux SGI system. This solution will provide CCR with additional high performance computing resources for distributed parallel scientific applications served at the centre. The Linux cluster from SGI, comprising of 76 dual Pentium III processor SGI 1100 servers, will become one of the primary compute engines at CCR, which supports 25 university departments.

Compaq announced several new offerings for the open source community, including a marketing relationship with SteelEye Technology to provide Linux clustering on Compaq ProLiant server and StorageWorks storage platforms, a new performance benchmark for the ultra-dense Compaq ProLiant DL320 server and a portal for the open source community.
