IBM will provide infrastructure technology to several centers in the U.K. National Grid. The company is collaborating with these Grid centers to link a massive network of computers throughout the United Kingdom.

Teleglobe will provide GigaPort, the Dutch next generation Internet project,with Internet connectivity and linkage to the world's major research and education networks. Teleglobe also will furnish a transatlantic fiber optic wavelength (lit fiber) connection for GigaPort's research use in developing the next generation Internet

The UK Grid Support Centre was officially launched end of July. The centre, part of the UK e-Science Core Programme, the Centre is led by the CLRC e-Science Centre with participation from Edinburgh and Manchester Universities.

 Fortran 2000 evolves to meet challenge of large scale numeric applications
The British Standards Institute (BSI) played host to the ISO working party (WG5) which is busy trying to interpret Fortran 95 queries and review the draft document of the Fortran 2000 standard. Fortran is an evolving modern programming language. The latest draft standard incorporates many of the best features from other languages, but remains faithful to its original highly efficient role which made it the dominant numerical scientific and engineering programming language to-date, and at the same time it ensures protection of the vast programming investment in Fortran software.  US army requests proposals for Simulation Center
The U. S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC) is requesting proposals for the continuance of the operation and maintenance of the Simulation Center (SC). The SC is available to users within the Department of Defense (DOD), Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO), High Performance Computing Modernization Office (HPCMO), authorized contractors, and other government agencies (OGAS). This acquisition is not open to non USA participation.

Sun has selected Delaware Bioinformatics Institute and Beijing Genomics Institute as Sun Centers of Excellence (COEs). Both sites were chosen for their expertise in computational biology and their potential to advance the field through research and partnerships with other institutions.

 Cray posts loss for second quarter
Cray reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2001. Cray revenues were $29.4 million, compared with revenues of $51.0 million for the second quarter of 2000.

 Institute for Systems Biology partners with Arctic Supercomputing Center
Supercomputers that have helped to analyse global climate change, space physics and ocean currents will be harnessed to solve equally intense problems in biology under a new partnership between the Institute for Systems Biology and the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The affiliation will support research related to genes and proteins in which extremely large datasets will be analyzed to better understand diseases and identify potential treatments and preventative strategies.

 Killdara unveils Vitiris, a lightweight web services platform for P2P environments
Killdara Corporation, a company active in the Grid Computing space, announced details of their second-generation product, the Vitiris Web Services Platform. Vitiris is designed for OEM and embedded use and support standards including SOAP, UDDI, and WSDL, which are collectively known as "Web Services".
