US Grid network provided by Qwest
Qwest Communications will build the world's most powerful network to support the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Distributed Terascale Facility (DTF) program. The DTF network will consist of four 10 gigabit/second wavelengths for a total network capacity of 40 gigabits/second. The DTF network will be 16 times faster than any research network available today -- enough capacity to transfer the entire contents of the world's publicly accessible Web sites among any of the four DTF sites in only two hours.

NSF provides $53 Million for a distributed terascale Grid facility
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $53 million to four U.S. research institutions to build and deploy a distributed terascale facility (DTF). The DTF will be the largest, most comprehensive infrastructure ever deployed for scientific research--with more than 13.6 Tflop/s of computing power as well as facilities capable of managing and storing more than 450 terabytes (trillions of bytes) of data.

Dutch ASCI school installs distributed cluster computer
Universities participating in the Dutch Grid include the Delft University of Technology, Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam, Leiden University and Utrecht University , grouped into the ASCI Research School (Advanced School for Computing and Imaging). Since 1997 ASCI has used a cluster concept based on Pentium Pro systems called DAS (Distributed ASCI Supercomputer). The new project (DAS-2) is partially supported by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

Mercury offers muli-processor conduction cooled systems
Mercury Computer Systems introduced the RACE++ Series conduction-cooled systems. Applications developed on Mercury's RACE++ Series air-cooled systems will run without modification on the new RACE++ Series conduction-cooled systems. The new systems, which incorporate PowerPC 7410 "G4" processors with AltiVec technology, will provide digital signal and image processing for a variety of defense electronics platforms such as tactical fighter aircraft, smart torpedoes, helicopter-based infrared systems, airborne and ground mobile surveillance radars, and land-based tactical vehicles.

Fakespace Systems develops US$4.5 million visualization system for Los Alamos National Laboratory
Fakespace Systems was awarded a $4.5 million U.S.)contract by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The contract calls for Fakespace Systems to design, build and install several custom visualization systems at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The large-scale visualization systems will include new high-brightness, stereoscopic digital projection technology. Multiple Mirage 2000 graphics projection systems, from Christie Digital Systems, will be tiled into a custom- designed, large format WorkWall display system for viewing extremely large computer data sets in very high-resolution detail. Capable of displaying 31 million pixels, the full system is expected to be the largest display of its type ever built.
