Europe has no machine amongst the world TOP10 supercomputers

Heidelberg 21 jun 2001 Europe is no longer present in the TOP10 of the world's fastest supercomputers. This can be concluded from the 17th TOP500 list of fastest supercomputer sites, presented at the Heidelberg SC2001 supercomputer conference. The fastest machine in Europe is Hitachi SR8000-F1/112 at the Leibniz Rechenzentrum in Muenchen Germany. It has a performance of just over 1 Tflop/s, measured as Rmax. It is the only European Tflop/s system in the list. Number 2, Fujitsu VPP5000/100 at the ECMWF in Reading, UK, has a performance of 886 Gflop/s. These are also the only machines in the TOP25.

Overall, there are 160 TOP500 supercomputer class machines in Europe.

The European TOP 10 sub list looks like follows:

Leading supercomputer country in Europe is Germany with 64 machines. UK (31) and France (20) follow. From the big industrial countries, Italy is clearly lagging behind with only 12 machines. Measured in Kflop/s per inhabitant, Luxembourg is leading with 509 Kflop/s per inhabitant.

Of course, this is because of the small number of inhabitants, that mixes up the statistics. From the bigger countries, Germany is leading: 117 Kflop/s per inhabitant, and agina, Italy is not doing so well with 22 Kflop/s per inhabitant.
