Quebec Government installs Compaq servers with 35 Tbyte

Montreal 28 May 2001 The Quebec Government will use its Alpha systems to implement GIRES, an important IT project for the Quebec Government. AlphaServer systems will be used as the hardware platform to run the integrated Oracle E-Business Suite.

The GIRES project ("Gestion Integree des RESsources" - integrated resources management) is intended to improve the government's management practices by using, among others, hardware and software solutions that are on the cutting edge of technology. The entire project is a major investment for the Quebec Government and $10 million will be allocated for the purchase and installation of the Compaq hardware.

"The fact that a committee of experts mandated by the government recommended Compaq out of the four companies in the running is evidence of the superior quality and reliability of the Alpha systems and reflects our ability to support the execution of the world's largest IT projects," noted Daniel Mercier, Regional Vice-President for Quebec, at Compaq Canada.

"The delivery of a first group of equipment for the technical infrastructure of the GIRES solution is a critical step in the continuation of the work related to this major modernization project of the governmental administration," said Sylvain Simard, Minister of State for Administration and the Public Services, Minister responsible for Administration and the Public Services and Chair of the Treasury Board.

The Compaq Alpha systems will serve 156 groups and nearly 66,000 public service employees. They will be able to simultaneously handle 5,500 user queries and store some 35 terabytes of data. The GIRES project includes the human, financial and material resources management processes of all ministries and organizations.
