High Performance Scientific Computing Support by the BMBF

Heidelberg 23 June 2001 The well known Ministerialrat Bernd Reuse, Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), gave an overview of the actual activities of BMBF in this field. He mentioned the National Coordination Committee for the Procurement of HPC for the Scientific Council which started its operation 31. May 2001. A detailed description will be given in an other article in Primeur. Reuse mentioned that HPC installations have to fast, to save time, as in about 5.5 years the number 500 performance of the top500 will be reached by a PC.

The HPC funding supported in the time frame of 1993 to 1998 about 23 projects, from 1997 to 2001 about 12. He did not disclose the figures and the amount of money for HPC project for the new time frame starting in 2002 to 2006. The new targets are HPC promotion measures, numerical processes and stability - methods made and experimental design, validation and verification of processes in TFlop/s applications. Another area is clusters and grid computing. He stated that HPC funds increase.

Germany is well equipped with supercomputers in academia and research.
