A new generation supercomputer taken into use by Finnish supercomputer centre CSC

Espoo 22 January 2001 On January 15, 2001 CSC, the Finnish center for high-performance computing and networking, took the first phase of supercomputer IBM RS/6000 SP with 128 processors into production use. The theoretical maximum efficiency of the equipment is 200 Gflop/s. The processors have a total of 64 GByte of internal memory and 0.5 TByte of external storage capacity. In 2002 the system will be extended to enable more than 1 Tflop/s. The system will then contain several hundred processors. CSC has an option to extend the system further by increasing the number of processors in 2003. In its final form, CSC's RS/6000 SP will be one of the most powerful computers in Europe.

The new supercomputer is delivered by WM-Data X-Way. Finnish research workers at universities and research institutions will use CSC's supercomputer for heavy-duty parallel computing. The huge memory capacity and number of processors are of particular importance to researchers who simulate physical phenomena with massive data amounts. Disciplines such as material physics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and quantum chemistry can readily utilize the increased computing capacity. Later the new system will most likely be used for weather forecasting as well.

The User Guide to IBM SP is available for customers in Adobe Acrobat PDF format on CSC's web pages at http://www.csc.fi/oppaat/ibmsp/.
