RS/6000 SP for Japanese high energy physics
Tokyo 19 January 2001 The Japanese High Energy Accelerator Research Organization has selected IBM's RS/6000 SP and High Performance Storage System (HPSS), an advanced software for storage management, to enhance a computing system used by its researchers. The RS/6000 SP will be mainly used as the back-end data server and computational server at the Organization, and also will handle huge amounts of data -- ranging from data collection and analysis of experiments to databases managing the operation of accelerators, and designing and development of accelerators.
Funded by the Ministry of Education, the organization is renowned as Japan's leading research institute. Many researchers from Japan and abroad are involved in studies of elementary particles, nuclei, structures and functions of matter, and many other related subjects utilizing several large accelerators.
The IBM high-end Unix server also will handle many international joint research projects.
In addition, the organization also will benefit from IBM's storage solutions, such as the 7133 serial disk system and the Magstar 3590 tape subsystem, that will store and manage critical research data.
HPSS is designed to work under distributed environments to provide a highly scalable, storage capacity. It is installed at more than 20 sites in the U.S., Europe and Japan, including laboratories of the U.S. Department of Energy, assorted high energy physics laboratories in the U.S., the U.S. Department of Defense, universities, and supercomputer centers.
The RS/6000 SP and HPSS are scheduled to begin operation on January 19, 2001 as part of the organization's Cluster Computer System, located at Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. The contract price is 30 million yen a month.
