University of Delaware installs AMD based Beowulf cluster
Sunnyvale 22 January 2001 The University of Delaware's Bartol Research Institute (BRI) has installed a
supercomputer powered by AMD Athlon processors. Racksaver's "Samson"
supercomputer, a Beowulf Cluster design that uses 128 AMD Athlon processors, was
purchased through a $500,000 Major Research Infrastructure (MRI) grant from the
National Science Foundation (NSF).
To match the speed of the AMD Athlon processor power, the system also employs
1GB bandwidth between nodes using Dolphin Interconnect's SCI (Scaleable Coherent
Interface) Wulfkit, offering an efficient combination of fast network hardware
and corresponding software.
AMD Athlon processor is already employed in
several supercomputers used for scientific research in both the academic and
private sectors, including systems used in universities such as the University
of Kentucky and the University of Utah, and in companies such as GeoCenter and
MSC.Software.
