DmSDK available in open source for Linux

Mountain View 04 January 2001 The source code for SGI's digital media software development kit (dmSDK) for the Linux operating environment is now available to the open source community. The dmSDK toolkit shortens the time required to create digital media applications across the SGI product line by allowing SGI software partners to write to a single application programming interface (API).

dmSDK provides Linux developers with a , cross-platform digital media API and is a key enabler allowing digital media developers to deliver applications for this increasing popular operating system.

dmSDK has been adopted by the Khronos Special Interest Group (SIG) as the basis for the digital media component of the proposed OpenML standard, together with OpenGL for the graphics component. OpenML will enable application developers to easily integrate audio, video and graphics content across a wide range of platforms.

With the rapid changes in media technology and market demands, common specifications are essential to create interoperability among platforms, hardware devices and software applications. The previous lack of integration of multivendor software and hardware products has proven to be an obstruction to the acceptance of computer-based digital tools for professional content creation, and the formation of the Khronos SIG marked a dedicated move by its member companies to create and support the desired integration. The Khronos SIG standard, OpenML, will enable the portability of software applications and is projected to increase the marketplace for professional authoring software and supporting hardware devices.

The Khronos SIG expects that adoption of OpenML will be widespread throughout the media industry in the next two years.

The dmSDK source code is now available for download from SGI's open source developer Web site at http://www.sgi.com/developers/oss/.
