New SGI 1100 low-end server

New York 30 January 2001 SGI announced the new SGI 1100 server , a dual Intel Pentium III processor-capable server that supports the Linux, Windows 2000 and Windows NT operating systems. The SGI 1100 server supports up to two Pentium III 800 MHz or 1 GHz processors and features a 133 MHz front-side bus and up to 2 GByte of memory for exceptional flexibility as an Internet, digital publishing or rendering server or as a compute node in a cluster, using SGI's Advanced Clustering Environment.

Technical computing professionals will appreciate the affordability and power-packed design of the SGI 1100 server as a space-saving solution for a broad range of technical and creative applications such as electronic design automation (EDA), bioinformatics, rendering, digital publishing, Internet infrastructure, Web serving and e-commerce. Customers that deploy the SGI 1100 server can easily rack and stack these affordable, ultrahigh-density servers to better utilize valuable real estate and built-in networking while providing critical data protection.

Available immediately through SGI's value-added resellers, the SGI 1100 server starts at $2,600 (U.S. list).

The SGI 1100 server includes the SGI Advanced Cluster Environment (ACE) for Linux software, a suite of programming, management and performance tools, services and support to provide a high-performance compute cluster. ACE is backed by the SGISM Global Services organization, and customers with SGI support contracts receive regular software updates and technology improvements to stay on the cutting edge of Linux compute clustering. Designed for the bioinformatics, education and research, energy and EDA markets, SGI ACE for Linux brings together SGI's broad experience in scalable computing with the latest developments from the open-source software community. The result is an integrated, high-performance and robust technical compute cluster solution with the industry's lowest total cost of ownership.

The SGI 1100 server is ideal for Internet, digital publishing and rendering applications, the company claims. The small 1U footprint of the SGI 1100 server gives service providers a powerful, thin serving solution with rack-and-stack scalability to expand their Internet offerings with ease and minimal expense as business needs change. The newly announced SGI Internet Server system for e-commerce provides a completely integrated, full-featured solution for single or multiple hosted store services. Available in February through SGI resellers, the solution is priced at $4,495 (U.S. list).

SGI Internet Server Environment (ISE) is a cost-effective Internet serving software solution that includes advanced management, monitoring and security tools, integrated installation scripts and a Web-based user interface. ISE provides basic Internet infrastructure and a foundation to support basic messaging, other infrastructure and Web-serving applications required by service providers. Available immediately through SGI resellers, ISE is priced at $99 (U.S. list). When combined with the SGI 1100 server, complete Internet serving configurations start at an affordable $2,850 U.S. list.

The SGI 1100 server is ideal as the foundation for cost-effective, scalable raster image processing (RIP) solutions. This supplements RIP products currently available from SGI customers, including Agfa, Heidelberg, Heidelberg Digital, Kodak and Nexpress-leaders in the digital-printing evolution.

Post-production and special-effects facilities will find the SGI 1100 server to be a cost-effective rendering platform. It delivers the scalability, processor and memory density and high-performance CPU and storage options required by demanding 3D animation and special effects rendering applications.

The addition of the new SGI 1100 server complements the existing line of Intel processor-based servers from SGI:

SGI 1450 server is an enterprise-class offering from SGI, powered by up to four Intel Pentium III Xeon 700 MHz processors in a compact 4U (7-inch) rack-mount configuration. Designed for data center customers who want maximum four-way system performance to run demanding business applications, implement clustering solutions or run enterprise-level e-commerce sites, SGI 1450 provides an affordable entry-level price point, significant expansion options and a range of reliability features to ensure continuous uptime. The SGI 1450 server easily mounts in industry-standard 19-inch racks.

SGI 1200 server offers slightly more configuration flexibility than SGI 1100. The SGI 1200 server is a scalable, high-availability server that utilizes Pentium III 700 MHz or 800 MHz processors to deliver outstanding performance. Designed to support demanding Internet-serving applications, as well as clusters of servers solving technical compute problems, SGI 1200 meets customer needs for rapid and unpredictable growth in server farms, Internet serving and technical compute cluster environments. With a thin form factor (2U or 3.5-inches in height), the system easily mounts in industry-standard 19-inch racks.
