Improved scalability of Solaris 8

Palo Alto 20 February 2001 Sun Microsystems third update of the Solaris 8 Operating Environment (OE) that includes more than 30 new and improved features that extend reliability, availability and scalability.

The new enhancements focus on delivering features and technologies that help improve performance, including the elimination of key bottlenecks, resulting in greater scalability and increased manageability for IT managers and users. The enhancements result in a 10 percent overall improvement in system performance over earlier Solaris 8 OE updates without changing applications or systems.

New performance-enhancing features designed to improve service levels across the system include:

  • A dramatic reduction in time - down from 22 hours for worse case to less than 30 minutes - on a one-terabyte storage - needed to create a file system on fresh storage subsystems
  • For database performance, refinements in UFS file system technology can increase database efficiencies by more than 200 percent
  • A new memory management facility delivers increased throughput and easier on-the-fly reconfiguration options and results in an increase in overall system performance by about 10 percent for general user loads in servers including Oracle database users
  • Dynamic Intimate Shared Memory (DISM) that provides database software users the ability to add or change memory on-the-fly, without having to reboot the database system
  • Diskless Client Management which allows for the migration of Diskless Client Support to the Solaris 8 Operating Environment
  • Solaris Management Console 2.0[tm] software that provides a consistent desktop interface to Solaris OE management tools and enables remote administration of the Solaris OE
