Distributed content infrastructure company Kalepa Networks secures $5 Million financing
Saratoga 20 February 2001 RedLeaf announced it has led a
$5 million round of capital for Kalepa Networks, a Palo Alto-based company
offering software infrastructure for edge content. The Kalepa solution optimises
content flow from both a network and application perspective in Peer to Peer
(P2P) and hybrid networks. Targeted customers will include application
developers and solution providers in media, publishing, healthcare information
and education sectors.
"We looked at over 20 P2P software companies (US) nationwide and picked Kalepa based
upon their superior team, strategy and business model," said George Hoyem,
managing director and co-founder of Redleaf Group. "The Kalepa strategy is
simple. Empower vertical application developers with world-class P2P software
infrastructure, and support and provide tools that allow them to quickly deploy
great solutions on the edge of the network that can be monetized."
In addition to capital, Redleaf will provide Kalepa with support services
including operational expertise. Kalepa will also have the opportunity to work
with other Redleaf companies as appropriate.
"We were impressed with Redleaf from the very beginning," said Miko Matsumura,
chief executive officer of Kalepa. "The depth and operational experience of the
Redleaf team is a strong part of the overall package and is superior to the
others we had seen and that makes all the difference in the world from an
entrepreneur's perspective. With Redleaf, we know that they understand how to
build a great company. In addition, they provide a birds-eye view of
technologies and markets through their portfolio companies, business partners
and investors."
"Kalepa's ability to `light up' the edge of the network for vertical application
providers will take P2P from music sharing to the reality of solving serious
business problems at the networks edge" says Glenn Osaka, CEO and President of
Reactivity, Inc., who recently joined Kalepa's Board of Directors. Glenn brings
over 20 years of technology industry experience to the board.
Kalepa's core team includes a former chief java evangelist from Sun, a
supercomputer researcher from Lawrence Livermore and a former Java product
architect. Previously, Kalepa secured $1 million in seed financing from a
variety of investors including Angel Investors LP, Jump Investors Inc., and
executives from Excite@Home, Marimba, Robertson Stephens and Ziff Davis.
