Amsterdam in Datagrid

Amsterdam 01 February 2001 SARA, a supercomputer centre located in Amsterdam, said it participates in the project to develop European DataGrid. Also a Dutch datagrid web site was announced.

At the end of December 2000 the European Commission has authorized a fund of 9.8 million Euro for the DataGrid project. As described in earlier issues of Primeur Magazine, the project, managed by CERN in Geneva, is a showcase for the development of a new model for worldwide distributed computing and data distribution.

Within the DataGrid project a distributed computing environment, especially developed for the analysis and distribution of vast amounts of data will be developed.

Within the DataGrid consortium SARA will participate in several subprojects in Mass Storage Management, Network Monitoring and contribute to the set-up of a 'testbed'.

The DataGrid project will run three years and has a scale of more than 400 man-years. In total 21 European institutes are involved. In the Netherlands, besides SARA, the NIKHEF and the KNMI (Dutch Meteorological Institute) participate in the project.

See the newsly opened Dutch DataGrid webpage for more information.
